Yes! You Can Work with ActorsSep 08, 2022
There are so many different types of students who want to work on speech, accents, and dialects, but one of my favorite groups to work with are my actors!
When I became a certified Speech-Language Pathologist way back in the year 2000, I didn’t even realize that this was a population I could work with!
I was beyond lucky to find a mentor to help me develop my Speech Pathology knowledge into the skills that I’d need to help actors learn the American Accent, as well as other accents and dialects that they can use to be more marketable in the entertainment industry.
Nowadays, I’m lucky to be that mentor to others. The best part of my job is helping SLPs, ESL teachers, and other speech pros realize that they already have many of the skills to work with actors too!
One of them is Debra Holtzman.
Debra is a NY and NJ Speech-Language Pathologist with over 24 years of experience and is also an Actor. She specializes in working with Actors who wish to work on their general American accent.
While Debra celebrates all accents and cultures, as an actor, she understands how competitive the acting industry can be. It is essential to be able to adjust your accent as needed for a role. She helps her students feel confident while working on self-tapes, monologues, scene work, voice-over work, audiobook narrations, and commercials.
In addition to working with actors, Debra enjoys helping all professionals gain confidence when speaking in any situation, helping them do well in that job interview or feel confident giving a workplace presentation. She loves finding the fun in working on accents while helping her clients meet their goals.
Debra is certified in the Accent Channel Method of Speech Improvement. This method is practical, fun, and easy for clients to learn. She has been lucky to have trained with Jessica from the Accent Channel, who has been teaching accents, dialects, and pronunciation for over 20 years.
