What Happens in an Accent Coaching Session?

A Simple Structure for an Accent Coaching Session (Step-by-Step)

Last week, I was talking with someone who’s been considering my GlobalVoice program, and she said something that stuck with me:

“I can picture myself doing this work and I know I’d be great…
until I try to imagine the first session.”

And I wasn’t surprised because that is where many people get stuck.

Not because the skills aren’t there, but because it’s hard to picture what to actually do in a session.

The good news is that most speech-language pathologists, ESL teachers, and communication professionals already have the foundation to do this work.

What’s usually missing is a clear, repeatable way to put it all together.

A Simple Structure for an Accent Coaching Session

While every instructor develops their own style over time, most sessions follow a similar flow:

  1. Review and Warm-Up

Sessions often begin with a quick check-in and review of previous material.

This might include:

  • Reviewing practice from the previous session
  • Noticing patterns in speech
  • Warming up the voice or speech system
  1. Targeted Instruction

Next comes focused work on a specific area.

This could include:

  • Pronunciation of specific sounds
  • Stress and rhythm patterns
  • Intonation and connection rules

Rather than trying to fix everything at once, the session focuses on one or two clear goals.

  1. Guided Practice

This is where the real progress happens.

Clients practice the target skill through:

  • Words and phrases
  • Sentences
  • Structured speaking tasks

The instructor provides feedback and helps the client adjust in real time.

  1. Carryover and Application

Once the skill is established, the focus shifts to real-world use.

This might include:

  • Practicing in conversation
  • Applying skills to work-related situations
  • Preparing for specific speaking tasks
  1. Assignment and Next Steps

At the end of the session, the client leaves with a clear plan.

This often includes:

  • Specific practice tasks
  • Audio or PDF practice materials
  • A clear focus for the next session to help stay motivated

What Most New Instructors Don’t Realize

Many people assume sessions need to be complex or highly technical.

In reality, what matters most is:

  • Clear structure
  • Consistent practice
  • Focused feedback

One instructor in my program shared that once she had a clear session structure, everything clicked. She felt ready to begin and signed her first private client at $75/session within a week.

That’s often the turning point.

Getting that first client is usually the hardest part. After that, confidence builds, clients continue for additional sessions or programs, and referrals begin to follow.

Why This Matters

When you understand how to structure a session, everything becomes easier:

  • You know what to do in each session
  • You can explain your services more clearly
  • Clients feel more confident committing

Without that structure, even experienced professionals can feel unsure.

A Quick Thought

If you’ve been thinking about doing this work, but keep going back and forth…

It’s totally normal to feel unsure about how to begin.
