First Sound For Accent Reduction Lesson Plan

Jun 22, 2019

Not sure where to begin with a new Accent Reduction, Accent Modification, Accent Training, or Pronunciation Training  student?

I always begin teaching the American Accent by working on /TH/.

Most non-native speakers make this English pronunciation mistake because this sound does not exist in most other languages.

So I know that most people will have trouble with it before I even hear them speak.  And that gives me time to listen for the other sounds that I will need to identify to create my Accent Training Lesson Plan.

Plus, TH is the most common consonant sound in English so your students  have many chances to get it wrong and many chances to get it right.

When they get it wrong, it can cause a lot of word confusion, but when they get it right, it adds SO MUCH speech clarity.  It's also a pretty easy sound to fix  (much easier than any vowel!) so your students will hear improvement without getting frustrated, and they will be motivated to continue.

Learn all about /TH/ the most common consonant in English in this short training lesson.

Accent Reduction, Accent Modification, Accent Training, and Pronunciation Training are all the same thing by the way,  they are just different names for the same process.   The name that I prefer and use is Accent & Pronunciation Training.

But regardless of what you call it, your lesson plan or curriculum should not ONLY focus on sounds.  Overall speech improvement is always the larger goal.

You should include instruction, practice exercises, and homework that focuses on:

  • Rhythm
  • Intonation
  • Most Common Words In English
  • Vocabulary
  • Idioms
  • American Culture

At the end of the day, what we do as teachers is not only improving the way a person pronounces words.  Our goal should always be to help our students be easily understood and feel more confident when speaking English.
