Why Accent Modification Specialists Charge More Than General English Tutors

May 18, 2026

The other day, I was doing a bit of research online.

I typed in something simple:
“accent training online”

And, like many of you probably have at some point, I ended up browsing through a few tutoring platforms.

Out of curiosity, I started clicking through profiles.

At first, everything looked pretty similar.

Teachers offering English lessons.
Different backgrounds.
Different countries.
A wide range of pricing.

Some sessions were $15.
Some were $25.
Some were even lower.

Nothing surprising there.

But then I started noticing something interesting.

The instructors who specifically focused on pronunciation, accent training, or communication skills…

Were charging significantly more.

Not just a little more.

In many cases, I was seeing rates in the $55–$95 range.

On the exact same platform.

That stopped me for a second.

Because it confirmed something I’ve believed about this field for a long time.

Why Accent Modification Specialists Charge More on Tutoring Platforms

A lot of people assume that platforms determine pricing.

That if you’re on a tutoring platform, you’re stuck competing at the lowest rate.

But that’s not actually what I saw.

On the same site, with the same audience, some instructors were positioned as:

👉 general English tutors

And others were positioned as:

👉 specialists

And the specialists were consistently charging more.

The Higher-Priced Instructors Had One Thing in Common

It wasn’t just experience.

It wasn’t just credentials.

It was how the service was defined.

The higher-priced instructors were offering something much more specific:

  • pronunciation training
  • accent modification
  • communication coaching
  • business communication support

They weren’t trying to teach “everything.”

They were solving a very clear problem for their students.

And when the problem is clear, the value is obvious and students are much more likely to enroll.

What Specialized Accent Coaches Are Doing Differently

When someone says:
“I teach English”

That can mean a lot of different things.

But when someone says:
“I help you speak clearly in meetings”
“I help you prepare for presentations”
“I help you improve your pronunciation so people understand you more easily”

That’s different.

That’s specific.

And that specificity makes higher rates feel justified.

Why Positioning Matters in Accent Modification and Communication Coaching

This isn't just about pricing.

It’s about positioning.

Because once your work is clearly defined:

✔ it becomes easier to explain
✔ it becomes easier for the right clients to find you
✔ it becomes easier for people to see the value

And naturally, pricing starts to reflect that.

The Pattern I Keep Seeing

This is not just something I saw on one platform.

It’s something I’ve seen over and over again:

👉 General services are often forced to compete on price.
👉 Specialized services compete on value

And accent and communication coaching provides incredible value when it’s structured and explained clearly.

What This Means for You

If you’ve been thinking about offering accent or communication training, this is worth paying attention to.

Because the difference isn’t:
“platform vs private practice”

The difference is:
👉 how the service is defined
👉 how it’s structured
👉 how clearly the benefits and outcomes are communicated

You don’t need to teach everything.

You need to offer something meaningful that solves a specific problem.

Want to See What This Looks Like in Practice?

If you’re already teaching on a platform, you may be closer to charging higher rates than you think.

In many cases, it comes down to how your sessions are structured and how clearly the value is communicated.
